TULSA, Okla. — One woman is dead after police said her son strangled her to death at an apartment complex in south Tulsa.
"This situation is sadly a domestic violence that really went too far, and we see this happen with some frequency," Tulsa Police Department's Captain Richard Meulenberg said.
Drayk Jones is charged with first-degree murder in the death of his mother.
By the time his fellow officers arrived to South Glen Apartments, Meulenberg said a mother in her late 50s was already in poor condition from strangulation. She later died at the hospital, he said.
The lone suspect is the woman's son — Drayk Jones. TPD said Jones was taken into custody shortly after arrival at the scene.
However, police said this wasn't their first visit to the unit, which is across Peoria Avenue from nearby Marshall Elementary.
"We have had some history here at the (unit), but that is not atypical to have calls of domestic violence," Capt. Meulenberg added. "And then it escalates to the point where unfortunately, one person just makes a horrible, horrible set of actions that takes the life of somebody else."
Neighbors in the complex told 2 News arguments were not uncommon to hear from the unit where TPD said the murder happened.
Across the street, salon owner Marlene Gonzalez worries about the effects the crime might have on her business.
"I'm surprised. I don't know why, and what happened," Gonzalez said,
Despite the crime scene just feet away, Gonzalez said she is still happy working in the area but that the city could help with crime and homelessness.
"If the city puts attention in this area a little more, maybe we can see something different," she said.
According to TPD, investigators don't believe anyone else was involved in Thursday's killing.
